Squatters Take Over United Nations Development Programme Flats at Cantonments in Accra - Housing  Minister Blows Alarm Bell

The Minister for Works and Housing who doubles as Member of Parliament (MP) for Bantama Constituency in Ashanti Region Honourable Francis Asenso Boakye, has indicated that squatters has taken over the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) flats in cantonments in Accra.

The Minister for Works and Housing who doubles as Member of Parliament (MP) for Bantama Constituency in Ashanti Region Honourable Francis Asenso Boakye, has indicated that squatters have taken over the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) flats in cantonments in Accra.
The minister made this note when he was answering a question filed by Honourable Yusif  Sulemana, who sought to know the occupants of the UNDP flats in cantonments and whether or not the occupants paid rent to the government. 
Mr. Asenso Boakye revealed that the current occupants of the UNDP flats are squatters and do not pay any rent.
The UNDP flats at Cantonments, which were constructed in 1960 to serve as a diplomatic enclave, offered residential accommodation to the staff of foreign missions in Ghana.
And the initial arrangements were to rent the flats to expatriates to generate revenue for the government," he elaborated.
The minister in his answer also stated that since the construction of the flats there has never been any major rehabilitation, of which he stated that the flats are in a deplorable state.
The Ministry of Works and Housing is in process of arranging a structured financial scheme to rehabilitate as well as redeveloped and also get all the squatters out of the building," he lamented
