Tunisia's president has dismissed 57 judges.

President Kais Saied of Tunisia has fired 57 judges, accusing them of corruption and sheltering terrorists.

He said he has given the judiciary numerous opportunities and warnings to "purify" itself in a television address.

Youssef Bouzaker, the former head of the Supreme Judicial Council, was one of the sackings revealed in the government's official gazette.

President Saied disbanded the council earlier this year as part of his efforts to solidify his position following his July takeover.

Tunisia's elected parliament has already been sacked, and the constitution has been suspended.

Next month, Mr. Saied has pledged a referendum on a new constitution.

The move is being boycotted by opposition parties and the biggest trade union umbrella.
