Sunyani, Bono regional capital, is gradually losing its enviable tag as the cleanest city in the country, with its central business district clearly littered with refuse and gutters choked a situation that has set some concerned residents to raise concerns.

A visit by Soiree  News to some parts of the Municipality showed serious sanitation challenges with refuse scattered all over, whilst the Assembly has seems to be taking no steps to rectify the situation.

Sunyani, the capital of the Bono Region was voted and awarded the cleanest city in Ghana for the year 2007 by the Ghana Tourist Board.

A citation accompanying the award prize and a plaque read, “this cleanliness and freshness of the sights and sounds of this city makes it the toast of many a visitor to the Brong-Ahafo region”.

“Though recently elevated into a municipality, this city continues to employ effective sustainable waste disposal and traffic management practices.”

“Thus, it is fast becoming the preferred destination for conference tourism with the support of its star rated and abundant catering service providers.”

As part of its award, DPP, an advertising agency is offering a billboard worth GH¢1,000 for advertisements by the Sunyani Municipality.

Fourteen years down the lane, the town seems to be losing its glory as the central business district has been piled with filth.

Stephen Kwarteng, Assembly Member of Atoase Electoral Area, which has serious sanitation challenges in an engagement with Soiree News Bono Regional Correspondent, Nana Ama Asiedu blamed the Sunyani East Municipal Assembly for failing to provide waste bins for use by the people.

"It's very unfortunate to see Sunyani gradually been swallowed by filth. The leaders must start acting fast because the situation does not speak good of this Assembly at all," a resident told SoireeNews reporter.

"The problem has persisted for quite a while and I have consulted the Zoomlion branch here yet they seem not to care about everything we do," another added.

Meanwhile, Daniel Owusu Korkor, head of the sanitation department of the Assembly, has said the outfit was handicapped as ‘’some upper hands’’ have restricted its operations.

"It been a month and the refuse keeps spreading. How do you expect us to live in this condition?"

He did not disclose which ‘’upper hands’’ have restricted the department’s operations.
