Reports from Tokyo 2020 Olympics suggest that Andy Murray has withdrawn from the men’s singles event due to a thigh injury.

Murray began his doubles campaign alongside Joe Salisbury on Saturday.

The Scot has withdrawn from the event on medical advice.

The two-time defending champion was due to face Felix Auger-Aliassime on day two of singles action.

After discussions with doctors, the 34-year-old was advised to compete in only one event, choosing doubles.

“I am really disappointed at having to withdraw but the medical staff have advised me against playing in both events,

“So I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the singles and focus on playing doubles with Joe Salisbury,’ Murray said.

Australia’s Max Purcell now replaces Murray in the men’s singles at the Olympics.

Andy Murray won gold in the singles event in London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Choosing to continue with his singles campaign would have also seen Salisbury’s tournament come to an end.
