GUTA Sympathises Fire Victims  In Kejetia Market in Kumasi
The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) expressed its heartfelt sympathy to all victim traders whose wares and properties estimated millions of Ghana Cedis were lost to the inferno that gutted Kejetia Market in Kumasi.
"We are, however, pleased to hear that there were no casualties as of the time of going to the Press yesterday. Thanks be to the Almighty God for His Mercy.
"We have observed with great concern that our markets-both old and new ones have been experiencing frequent fire outbreaks with varied reasons for a couple of years now, which, indeed is heartbreaking and needs to be stopped as it takes chunk of our business resources and drains our economies as members of the trading community, the President of GUTA, Dr. Joseph Obeng said in a statement.

According to the statement,  effective policing of the markets by the authorities will be the best way to ensure safety and security of the market places rather than only collecting levies and leaving traders to their fate.
"May we also seize this opportunity to also console the Board and management of the market for the unfortunate incident and urge them to conduct independent investigations into the actual cause of the fire outbreak in the market and put in place a more effective mechanism to forestall such recurrence in the future.
"Last but not least, the Boards and managements of marketplaces should also ensure that markets are duly insured against such risks," the statement noted.
The statement assured that "GUTA on our part, are engaging some insurance companies in serious negotiations to start insuring members of the trading community in the markets based on memorandum of understanding that will be beneficial to all in the event of such unforeseen calamity."
