The Minister of Transport Kwaku Ofori Asiamah who double as Chairman of Maritime Organisation of West and Central Africa(MOWCA) is urging member states to come together with the aim of developing the maritime resources.

Speaking at the 16th Session of the MOWCA General Assembly at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra, Mr Ofori Asiamah said the maritime industry contributes immensely to the development and prosperity of a nation.  For this reason MOWCA has a very Important mandate to execute for the safety, security and sustainable exploration of resources in the maritime domain for its people.

MOWCA was originally established in 1975 as a ministerial conference of West and Central African states, for swift operations of maritime transport within the member states.

Mr Kwahu Ofori Asiamah re-echoed the need for member states to work together. According to him no single member state can make significant strive on their own in areas such as Maritime Security, Maritime navigation, infrastructure development and environmental protection can only become effective when approached with coordination and integrated efforts.

According to her, over 90% of Africa's International trade, imports and exports are conducted by sea.

Further, she urged participants at the conference on the need to have a united front on maritime issues and also make clearer the importance of the maritime sector in the development of the African continent.
