It appears that Saudi Arabia is modifying its regulations considerably.

This year could see Saudi Arabia compete for the title of Miss Universe

A fashion model and influencer claimed to have been selected, leading organizers to speculate that the Muslim nation may have its first Miss Universe contender this year.

The Miss Universe Organisation “is currently undergoing a rigorous vetting process qualifying a potential candidate to be awarded the Saudi Arabia franchise”, Maria Jose Unda, the organisation’s coordinator of international relations, said in a statement to AFP.

“We’ll have a decision on the National Director for Saudi Arabia very, very soon,” she said, noting it was “possible” for Saudi Arabia to have a contestant in place before the next edition of the competition, scheduled for September in Mexico.

The announcement was made in response to the internet craze that Saudi model Rumy al-Qahtani caused in late March when she wrote to her tens of thousands of Instagram followers expressing her gratitude for being selected as Saudi Arabia's representative at Miss Universe. Images of Qahtani, a 27-year-old Riyadh local, were posted on the page.

She was shown holding the green Saudi flag with the Islamic creed, or shahada, imprinted on it while wearing a sequined dress.

Less than a week later, Miss Universe released a statement calling Qahtani's article “false and misleading” and denying that the Gulf nation had conducted any sort of selection procedure.

If it occurs, Saudi Arabia's attempt to sooth its ultra-conservative image will continue with the country's Miss Universe contest, as the de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, looks to entice travelers and investment.
