Jubilation Erupts In Ashalaja Over Court Ruling Reaffirming Solomon Ackaah As Akwanor Royal Family Head

The High Court has delivered a final verdict legally affirming Mr. Solomon Mintah Ackaah as the substantive and principal head of the Akwanor Royal Family of Ashalaja in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, amidst jubilation and merrymaking by local residents. 

The court held that Mr. Solomon Mintah Ackaah, gave evidence to show he was appointed and installed as the head of the family on July 9, 2009.

Consequently, the court asked the defendants to relinquish any assets of the family that may come to them by reason of holding themselves as joint family heads.

Community celebrations and reactions

On Saturday July 25 2026, Muslim faithful, Zongo chiefs, hundreds of youth, and Ga traditional office holders joined together to celebrate Mr. Solomon Mintah and wish him well in his new tradtional leadership role.

The celebration was successfully and peacefully held without the protection of police and security agencies, which proves there is lasting peace and unity among the factions after the final verdict on the long-standing dispute.

Residents expressed happiness that the long-standing dispute over the Akwanor family headship has ended, which will bring peace, unity, security, and development to Ashalaja and nearby communities.

Press Briefing and Legal Details 

Addressing a crowded press conference at Ashalaja, the family's legal counsel, Lawyer Francis Bruce detailed how the case moved through various courts until reaching a final judgment in favor of Mr. Solomon Mintah as the principal head of the family.

The lawyer emphasized that the ruling reaffirms Mr. Mintah's legal authority and capacity to manage and supervise all lands belonging to the family in the Ashalaja area.

Call for reconciliation

Flanked by traditional office leaders, the lawyer urged opposing family members to bury their differences, respect the court's decision, and join forces to lobby for local development projects.

The family's legal counsel advised residents living on their Ashalaja lands to contact the family immediately to regularize their land title documents, as the court confirmed the family as the sole custodians of the land.

The family cautioned the general public to disregard anyone who purports to act, represent, or hold themselves out as a head or lawful representative of the Akwanor Royal Family other than Mr. Solomon Ackaah Mintah.

 He stressed that members of the public are particularly advised to exercise utmost caution before entering into any transactions involving lands belonging to the Akwanor Royal Family of Ashalaja. 

He further emphasized that anyone who transacts with unauthorized persons does so entirely at their own risk."

The history of official appointment

Mr. Solomon Mintah Ackaah was duly and validly appointed as the Akwanor Royal Family of Ashalaja by the Principal Elders of the family on 9th July, 2009, In accordance with the customs, traditions and practices governing the Akwanor Royal Family.

Following his appointment, certain persons commenced legal proceedings challenging his capacity and status as Head of Family. 

After a full trial, the High Court delivered judgement affirming and declaring that Mr. Solomon Mintah Ackaah was the lawful Head of the Akwanor Royal Family.

Dissatisfied with the decision, the unsuccessful parties appealed to the Court of Appeal, which dismissed the appeal in its entirety and affirmed the judgement of the High Court. 

Notwithstanding the concurrent findings of the two superior courts, the same parties proceeded to appeal further to the Supreme Court of Ghana.

The Supreme Court subsequently dismissed the appeal and unequivocally affirmed the judgement of both the High Court and the Court of Appeal, thereby finally settling the issued and confirming beyond dispute that Mr. Solomon Mintah Ackaah is the lawful Head of the Akwanor Royal Family of Ashalaja.

Accordingly, there exists no pending dispute whatsoever regarding the leadership of the Akwanor Royal Family.

The Supreme Court consistently nullifies unauthorized land transactions

The Supreme Court further declared null and void every purported alienation, sale, transfer or disposition of the lands belonging to the Akwanor Royal Family undertaken by Adams Addy and Adu Akwaanor, who had unlawfully held themselves out as heads of the Family.

The apex Court made it abundantly clear that these individuals possessed no lawful authority whatsoever to transact on behalf of the Akwanor Royal Family.

 Consequently, any person claiming title through such unauthorised transactions does so entirely at his or her own risk and subject to the consequence of the law.

PREVIOUS COURT ORDERS AND CONTEMPT

Prior to these proceedings, the predecessor of Mr. Solomon Mintah Ackaah had obtained an order of Injunction restraining Adams Addy and Adu Akwaanor from holding themselves out as Heads of the Akwanor Royal Family; and selling, alienating or otherwise dealing with lands belonging to the Family.

In blatant disregard of the authority of the Court, the restrained persons continued to present themselves as heads of the family and proceed to dispose of portions of family lands. 

Their deliberate disobedience of the Court's orders resulted in contempt proceedings, following which Adams Addy was convicted and sentenced for contempt of court. 

These judicial pronouncements remain valid and binding.

A recent High Court judgment 

In a further attempt to create confusion within the Akwanor Royal Family, on Ishmaila Armah Quansah unlawfully held himself out as the Head of the Akwanor Royal Family of Ashalaja. 

The matter was once again placed before the High Court for determination.

On 2nd June, 2026, the high Court ( General Jurisdiction Division 13) delivered judgement in favour of Mr. Solomon Mintah Ackaah, once again declaring and proclaiming him as the substantive and undisputed Head of the Akwanor Royal Family of Ashalaja. 

This latest judgement reinforces the consistent position taken by the superior courts of Ghana over the years and finally puts to rest every unfounded claim the headship of the family.
