An eyewitness told Soireenews that the illegal miners dug around a tree and unfortunately toppled and caved the pit on the victims, killing the two students instantly.

Two male students of St. Stephen’s Senior High Technical School (STEPSS), and Begoro Presbyterian Senior High School (B PRESSEC) have died in a galamsey pit in Akyem Asiakwa, the Municipal capital of Abuakwa South Municipality in the Eastern region of Ghana.

The bodies of the victims were retrieved about two hours ago on Friday, August 6, 2021, and are to be deposited in Kibi government Hospital Morgue.

Information gathered by SoireeNews revealed that the two students; one in his final year at STEPSS was engaged in illegal mining on the mountainous part of the Atewa Forest reserve on Thursday, August 5, 2021, but did not return, and a search began to trace his whereabouts.

Alarmed was raised on Friday, which a search party of Police and town folks walked a long distance to the scene where the two victims were retrieved, but they were, unfortunately, found trapped dead in an abandoned mining pit.

An eye witness said a tree which the illegal miners dug around toppled and caved the pit on the victims, killing the two students instantly.

Police are yet to officially release a report about the death of the two students.
