Tunisian president fires foreign minister

According to the presidency, Othman Jerandi, the nation's foreign minister, has been removed by Tunisia's president Kais Saied.

The president replaced Mr. Jerandi with Nabil Ammar, Tunisia's ambassador to the European Union. He did not state why Mr. Jerandi was fired.

The positions of the ministries for trade, agriculture, and education have already been filled; Mr. Jerandi is the fourth minister to lose his job this year.

In order to increase the power of the presidency at the expense of the legislature and the judiciary, President Saied took a number of actions in 2021.

Following the president's 2021 shut-down of the legislature and grant him nearly unrestricted executive authority, opposition parties boycotted the 2022 legislative elections, accusing him of plotting a coup.

For the second round of voting in the parliamentary election last month, little over 11% of Tunisians participated.

In the midst of protests by Tunisians who are growing more and more dissatisfied with the status of the economy and over Mr. Saied's acquisition of nearly all authority, there has been a worsening political and economic crisis.
