A petition has been set up to get the wheels in motion for this idea, with more than 26,000 fans - at the time of writing - backing the idea of having an extra day off if the Three Lions win their first trophy since 1966.

Whether the idea makes much of an impact remains to be seen, with the government perhaps unlikely to entertain such a proposal at such a time.

But this could likely change as more people have signed the petition with the Euro 2020 finals edging closer.

The petition on Change.org reads: "England may be playing a European Championship Final at 8 pm on Sunday 11th July.

"It would be beneficial and sensible to give the country the day off the next day if England wins, in the form of an extra Bank Holiday Monday."

The government responds to all petitions that get more than 10,000 signatures. At 100,000 signatures, this petition will be considered for debate in Parliament.

The petition, started by Lee Jones, comes ahead of England versus Italy at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday night.

“By convention, the Queen acts on the advice of ministers. The Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is the government department responsible for bank holidays,” Parliament’s website explains.

Unsurprisingly, the idea of having an extra bank holiday was pitched during England's run in the 2018 World Cup, where it looked possible that they could go the whole way only to be denied by Croatia in the semi-final.

That loss disrupted plans back then, but as the team have taken one further step forward in this tournament, the idea has more momentum behind it.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn even backed the shouts back in 2018, suggesting Gareth Southgate's side's exploits were worthy of an extra day off work.

The ex-Labour leader-backed calls for an extra bank holiday, but it remains to be seen whether one is suggested formally in parliament, especially with such a quick turnaround.
