The Chiefs will campaign in 2024 if you reject grassroot choices - Asanteman Nkosuo NPP Mpuntuo cautions

The Asanteman Nkosuo NPP Mpuntuo (progress) Group have cautioned the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo to disregard the views of some traditional leaders when it comes to the appointment of the Metropolitan, Municipal, District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

They clarified that the stance of chiefs as non-partisan is functioning, meaning they have less knowledge in issues of political rule and it is needful to prompt them of their position to counteract browsing through the affairs of governance.

The Chairman of Asanteman Nkosuo NPP Mpuntuo, Dr Mohammed Issah Ababio expanded that the grassroots of the New Patriotic Party have much knowledge about personalities presented for the MMDCE positions therefore when it comes to testaments, they are the best to be consulted.

He accused some previous appointments of MMDCEs in the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies made by the President of Ghana in his first term which almost cost the party during the December General elections. Dr Mohammed Issah Ababio voiced that such is likely to happen if the right people are not consulted for assignments and if the NPP is determined to break the 8, then seeking political counselling from chiefs must be stopped.

He cautioned that if the grassroots choices are rejected for some self-centred traditional leaders’ assessment on MMDCEs appointments, the party executives will be required to depend on the efforts of same chiefs during campaigns.

“Chiefs are non-partisan in terms of politics and they play no role in campaigning,” said.

"If the president fails to heed the grassroots and rather depend on the choices of chiefs, during election time, they will be asked to see the same chiefs to campaign for the party,” he added.

The pressure Group at a press conference on Friday, July 30, 2021, at the Children’s Park, Amakom Kumasi addressed that the honesty demonstrated by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo since his election to lead Ghana should be exposed in his appointment of MMDCEs this time.

They disclosed having presented a person of their choice to be appointed as MCE, hence their pleadings to the President to consider the competence and loyalty of the candidate for the position.

The Chairman of Asanteman Nkosuo NPP Mpuntuo made known that regardless of external hands tampering with the appointment and other issues arising, they are confident that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo will weigh up their report and furnish their humble request.

“We have submitted someone who has been loyal to the party since 1992 to 2002. He was a polling agent, party coordinator and has excelled in every position and task given.

“He further became the Youth Organizer in his municipal, an organizer and contested as the deputy secretary. He deserves to be pushed to continue the hard work for the party.

“He has served as the assemble man of the electoral area for three consecutive times and at the vetting, he was adjudged as one of the best and we believe if he is appointed the MCE, he will impact greater change."

He continued that, “there is a chief who is distracting his appointment and we care warning party executives not to heed him because his acts could bring consequences.

"The grassroots support such and we do not want the president to dismiss his nomination and maintain the current MCE. We are following the progress and we want the right thing to be done. The vice president office, party General secretary, John Boadu and all executives are aware of the person I am talking about.”
