Taxation of church tithes has been halted by a court ruling – Report

According to the Daily Nation newspaper, a Kenyan high court has barred the tax authority from levying taxes on tithes, contributions, and sacrifices made to churches.

Thika Road Baptist Church owed the Kenya Revenue Authority 5.5 million shillings ($47,000; £37,000) in unpaid taxes, according to the Kenya Revenue Authority, which said the church had failed to submit a tax exemption certificate.

Churches in Kenya are free from paying tithe taxes, but the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) persisted in getting the exemption, according to the newspaper.

"I thus find and hold that the church did not need to seek an exemption because tithes, offerings, and freewill donations are not income chargeable with income tax," Justice David Majanja is reported as stating.
