Somalia says over 100 militants killed in operations

The Somali National Army (SNA), which is assisted by US forces, has conducted operations in the central Hiiraan region over the past three days, killing more than 100 al-Shabab insurgents, the government announced on Monday.

According to a statement released by the state-run Somali National TV, "Air support from the United States of America has aided this operation commanded by SNA."

Conflicts between al-Shabab rebels and clan militia supported by the government have been raging for weeks in Hiiraan and the nearby Galgudud district.

On Monday, the army was said to have killed at least 54 militants in the Hiiraan region, according to state TV.

The army reported the previous day that coordinated operations with clan militia had resulted in the deaths of over 75 insurgents.

In its latest video message on Sunday, al-Shabab spokesperson Ali Dheere threatened to retaliate against the government's "desperate" use of clan militia.
