A white South African farmer was jailed after firing a rifle at a group of black fishermen, claiming he was shooting at hippos.

On Tuesday, the 77-year-old man is claimed to have fired a shot at a couple fishing in the Mogol River in Limpopo province.

A 38-year-old lady was injured, while her partner fled and reported the incident to the authorities.

The suspect was detained for attempted murder and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

"The woman was transported to the hospital for treatment, and police were called to investigate." The accused guy said he was shooting at the animals [hippos], according to the South African Police Service.

The police seized two rifles, one revolver, one pistol, and two airguns during the arrest.
