Sudan forces fire tear gas at protesters

In the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, police on Sunday used tear gas to disperse anti-coup demonstrators.

Since General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the army, assumed power in October of last year, delaying a transfer to civilian government, the city has been the site of frequent protests.

To stop demonstrators from assembling, security authorities had set up roadblocks on Nile river bridges connecting Khartoum and its suburbs.

General Burhan promised to clear the way for a civilian government earlier this month, but civilian opposition groups dismissed his promise as a sham.
