Kenyan student accused of faking kidnap for ransom

A medical student who allegedly staged his own kidnapping to demand his parents pays a ransom has been detained by police in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

The 23-year-old is charged with going missing on Sunday and then calling his mother to demand 70,000 Kenyan shillings ($593; £494) in ransom money.

The first installment of the ransom was paid on Wednesday, but according to the police, the student went on a drinking binge outside of town with a woman who drugged his drink and stole the money.

He allegedly requested and received the second installment of the ransom on Thursday, but was quickly apprehended and the money was discovered hidden in his shoes.

Police say the student confessed to having squandered the money meant for last semester's fees and faked his kidnap to raise more funds.

The suspect is waiting to be arraigned in court.
