According to a senior UN official who spoke to the BBC, the peacekeepers who were detained on Sunday after killing two individuals on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda were from Tanzania.

The shooting, which resulted in injuries to 15 persons, was harshly criticized by the UN.

At least 20 people have perished in violent demonstrations against the UN Monusco peacekeeping force over the last week.

Many Congolese accuse it of failing to defend citizens from rebel attacks.

While the shooting on Sunday may further damage the UN force's credibility, correspondents report that the Congolese military has also faced criticism for failing to bring security to a region where dozens of armed groups are active.
