According to Robert Nayeja, a senior official in the Nsanje District, the boat was transporting about 37 individuals who were traveling to their crops on the Mozambican side.

A baby who was a passenger has had his or her body recovered.

Senior police officer Agnes Zalakoma told the VOA that more fatalities are anticipated as investigators and rescue crews look for the missing people. 13 people have been saved so far.

According to a local lawmaker, there were crocodiles and hippos in the river and no motorboats were allowed to use it.

The boat mishap marks the third fatal river tragedy in three years.

After being devastated by a tropical storm in March that killed 511 people and went missing 533 more, Malawi is now beginning to recover.
