Sudan's interior minister sacked amid lawlessness

Anan Hamed Mohammed Omar, who serves as both the acting interior minister and police chief, has been fired by Sudan's military leader, Lt Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

Sudan's interior minister sacked amid lawlessness

Gen Burhan announced Khalid Hassan Muhyi al-Din as the new general director of police in a statement.

No explanation for the dismissal was given, although Gen. Burhan had previously fired the governor of the central bank and two diplomats from the foreign ministry in similar decrees.

Since the violence began on April 15th, the police have not been present in places affected by the war, including the capital city of Khartoum.

As a result, there have been several reports of criminal activity in these regions, including looting and robberies.

A month of fighting between Sudan's rival military factions appears to have no end in sight despite much-touted truce talks brokered by the US and Saudi Arabia.
