In a crackdown, Nigeria arrests a presidential candidate.
However, the EFCC claimed in a statement that it was "left with no choice" after Mr Okorocha breached his bail and failed to appear for questioning.
Just days before the ruling APC party's presidential primaries, Nigeria's anti-corruption agency arrested a presidential hopeful.
Rochas Okorocha was detained in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, on allegations of corruption involving the diversion of 2.9 billion nairas ($7 million; £5.6 million) in public monies and property.
The alleged crimes were perpetrated between 2011 and 2019 while he was governor of the south-eastern state of Imo. Previously, he disputed the allegations.
Currently, the 59-year-old politician serves as a senator. The EFCC has taken him into custody.
According to reports, following Mr. Okorocha's detention at his apartment, there was an hour-long standoff between some of Mr. Okorocha's supporters and anti-graft agency officials.
His supporters claim that the detention is an attempt to derail his presidential campaign.
However, the EFCC claimed in a statement that it was "left with no choice" after Mr. Okorocha breached his bail and failed to appear for questioning.
The EFCC has launched an anti-corruption campaign that has already resulted in the arrest of the country's accountant-general, who denies any wrongdoing.
Nigeria will hold elections in February of the following year to elect a successor to President Muhammadu Buhari, whose second term ends in May.
