Separatists in Nigeria deny beheading a wedding couple

The accusation that a separatist group in south-eastern Nigeria decapitated two soldiers - a couple - who were attacked on their way to their traditional wedding has been refuted as "laughable" by the group.

The army attributed the deaths in Imo state over the weekend to the armed wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob).

Ipob wants a group of states in the southeast, mostly populated by people of the Igbo ethnic group, to secede and form Biafra, an independent country.

"Ipob has no involvement in the abovementioned tragedy, which is a heinous conduct in Igbo tradition," the secessionists' spokesman Emma Powerful stated in a statement.

"What investigations did the army conduct to corroborate their assertions that such heinous deed was masterminded by Ipob before jumping to their hasty conclusion?"

"The most recent charge is part of their misinformation campaign to tarnish our international name."
