A Chief has been granted bail at the Koforidua Circuit Court B' for allegedly defiling and impregnating a Junior High School girl of 15 years old in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua.

Dademantse of Mpanmu, near Dedeso, Mark Koranteng, age 65 was arrested by Begoro Police in the Fanteakwa North District after the parents of the victim made a formal complaint to the Begoro police.

The parents "opined, that they observed strange physical changes and symptoms of pregnancy on the victim, adding that on February 2021, the accused who used to call the victim “my wife ” sent someone to call her for him for an errand but allegedly took advantage and had sexual intercourse with her".

The parents alleged that the victim indicated that, the chief subsequently had another sexual intercourse with her again in the same month.

They made an official report to Begoro Police but the case was referred to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) at Regional Police Headquarters in Koforidua.

The medical Doctor endorsed the medical report form issued to the victim stating that “pregnancy has been confirmed with a urine pregnancy test. Abnormal examination revealed palpable uterus up to umbilicus which is mildly tender“.

The Chief was subsequently arrested and during interrogation, admitted that he invited the victim to his house twice to give her money but declined to have had sex with her.

According to the Prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Benard Annor, the chief was charged with the offence of defilement.

He has been granted bail by the Koforidua Circuit court B' to reappear on Monday, July 26, 2021.

This comes after the Eastern Regional Manager of Glo Ghana telecommunication company was arrested by Police for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old SDA form 2 JHS student, in Koforidua.

The Girls Education Unit of Eastern Regional Police Command has expressed worried over enormous sexual abuses against teenage girls, and leading to an increase in teenage pregnancies and school dropouts.

According to them, more than 17,000 teenage pregnancies were recorded in the Eastern Region in the year 2020 due to lockdown and making it the 2nd highest in Ghana and just after the Ashanti Region.

The GEU explained that most of these girls have dropped out of school. The Ghana Education Service is therefore implementing a ” back to school” project to ensure these pregnant students go back to school after delivery.
