BTC joins Forestry commission to clamp down herdsmen, chief orders shoot and kill

The Berekum Traditional council together with the Forestry Commission has declared war against Fulani herdsmen for the destruction of the forest reserves and foodstuffs in various farms.

The traditional council together with the commission indicated that the Fulani herdsmen according to reports are destroying the forest reserves with their cattle due to overgrazing and are also destroying the farm produce of farmers.

However, these Fulani herdsmen have been robbing, terrorizing farmers, and raping women they come across in their farms.

As part of efforts to understand the situation and proffer pragmatic solutions to the problem the traditional council led by the Chief of Berekum Daasebere Dr, Amankona Diawuo II has ordered: “shoot to kill”.

The Chief has given green light to gun down estray cattle in the forest reserves as part of efforts by a security task force that consists of the soldiers and members of forestry’s task force to evict cattle in the area.
Daasebere Dr, Amankona Diawuo II said the task force has been given the required and necessary resources and is now focused on the total evacuation of the cattle in the forest.

He explained that they have been informed for about 10yrs now about the forest reserves being destroyed by the herdsmen and they have been engaging with the Fulani herdsmen to put a solution to it but it proved futile.

Daasebere stressed that there have been similar issues in another part of the country which took government intervention.
He said they have noticed that recently the cattle have increased in numbers and have invaded five out of the seven forest reserves in the Sunyani district hence the attack launched on these nomadic herdsmen.

He condemned the presence and unscrupulous activities of the herdsmen, saying they are operating on their lands illegally.

He assured that the traditional council will do everything possible to get these nomadic herdsmen out of the forest.

He made this known in a media engagement at his palace in Berekum to brief the media on actions taken against the Fulanis.
