---Thousands of Affected Residents Face Extreme Hardship

The Manklalo of Mepe Traditional Area in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, Torgbe Korsi Nego VI, has expressed deep concern over the continued struggles of thousands of people who were adversely affected by the devastating floods caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Torgbe Korsi Nego VI, who serves as the Acting Paramount Chief and President of Mepe Traditional Council lamented that the severe flooding that hit Mepe in October 2023 continues to present major challenges for the victims, many of whom lost their homes, businesses, crops, fishing equipment, and livestock. 

He disclosed that numerous families lost everything they had worked for over the past several decades.

The chief noted that although emergency relief items were provided by philanthropists, corporate bodies, and the international community, the painful reality is that thousands of victims are still struggling daily to rebuild their livelihoods.

 This ongoing crisis has plunged the area into severe hardship and poverty. 

He disclosed that thousands of affected residents remain economically vulnerable, with many families currently living in extreme hardship. 

He added that some flood victims are still living in tattered tents and makeshift structures.In light of these harsh living conditions, the chiefs renewed their call to President John Dramani Mahama not to forget the people of Mepe, especially those hardest hit by the disaster. 

He called for urgent intervention from the government, philanthropists, and corporate institutions to support long-term recovery and reconstruction efforts. 

This assistance is critical to rebuilding sustainable homes, restoring livelihoods, reviving agriculture, improving drainage systems, and strengthening infrastructure to make the Mepe community more resilient against future floods.

Furthermore, he stressed the urgent need for the government to compensate those affected, noting that the compensation package for the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage remains unresolved. 

 Torgbe Korsi Nego VI, called on the government to engage the chiefs and victims in a town hall meeting to authenticate the database of affected residents before distributing compensation, ensuring that no flood victim is left out.

The Chief stated, "The people of Mepe are hardworking. We are not asking for charity; we are asking for sustainable opportunities to rebuild our lives, return to normalcy, and restore the dignity that was taken away from us by circumstances beyond our control."

He concluded by stating that the flood-affected community cannot thrive without the redevelopment of an ultra-modern production market. He noted that the existing Mepe Tegorla market is currently inadequate to serve the growing commercial needs of the area

The traditional office holder called on the government of President John Dramani Mahama to strengthen healthcare facility by increasing the number of healthcare professionals providing medical equipment and expanding the infrastructure to meet the growing healthcare demand or needs of the densely population in Mepe and its several communities.

He stated that the Mepe health facility has become the principal healthcare institution for the people of Mepe and its several surrounding communities in the district. 

Unfortunately, the chief pointed out that despite the increasing number of patients, this primary healthcare facility continues to struggle. 

He noted that it suffers from a shortage of staff, limited staff accommodation, insufficient medical equipment, and inadequate infrastructure development. 

Consequently, the traditional leader further called on the government of President John Dramani Mahama to strengthen the facility by increasing the number of healthcare professionals, providing essential medical equipment, and expanding the infrastructure to meet the growing demands of Mepe's densely populated communities."
