Unified Group Decries Akufo-Addo/Bawumia Regime's Shameful Suppression Of Convention Programme
PRESSURE GROUP, Unified Group has  condemned in the strongest possible terms, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia New Patriotic Party
(NPP) government's outrageous cancellation of the Convention Programme, a gathering of prominent Pan-African figures, just hours before its commencement.
According to the group, this blatant act of suppression against freedom of expression and critical discourse is a direct affront to democracy and the Ghanaian people.
The programme, the group noted featuring renowned figures like Peter Obi, P.L.O. Lumumba, and Julius Malema, had received prior government approval and was slated to take place at Independence Square, a national symbol of liberty.
"However, at the eleventh hour, access to the venue was denied through the deployment of National Security forces, effectively shutting down the programme.
"While flimsy claims of security concerns are offered as justification, it is evident that this cancellation stems from the Akufo-Addo administration's deep-seated fear of open dialogue and critical scrutiny," the group noted in a press statement copied to Soireenews.com.
The statement singed and issued by the leadership of the group in the persons of Sarfo Kantanka, Dari Naamwinkumah, and Nyaaba Boniface, the group indicated that the programme's potential to expose the government's failings, particularly in an election year, appears to be the true motive behind this act of suppression.
"This is not an isolated incident. The Ghanaian people have witnessed a consistent pattern of the current regime silencing dissenting voices, including journalists and ordinary citizens. The cancellation of the Convention Programme is a stark reminder of the authoritarian tendencies that threaten Ghana's democratic fabric.
"The Unified Group demands the immediate reversal of this decision and urges the Akufo-Addo regime to uphold its fundamental obligation to respect the democratic rights of its citizens," the group stressed in the statement.
The statement calles upon the international community to witness this blatant disregard for democratic principles and stand in solidarity with the Ghanaian people in their fight for a government that fosters open dialogue and respects dissent.
"Together, we shall overcome,' the statement noted.
The Unified Group remained unwavering in its commitment to advocating for a brighter future for Ghana and the continent.
"We believe that the Ghanaian people will overcome this latest attempt at suppression and continue their march towards a more just and democratic society," the statement concluded.
