At a base in the city of Goma, a memorial service is being held for the four UN troops who died during anti-UN riots in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, is present at the ceremony.

Another peacekeeper who passed away in the nation while battling the M23 rebel organization is also being honored.

They had all spent less than six months at the Monusco UN peacekeeping operation. Indian and Moroccan nationals are among them.

The ceremony takes place a day after UN forces opened fire in Kalindi, a bordering town with Uganda, killing two locals.

Frustration over what residents see as an inability by the peacekeeping force to stop attacks by armed groups in the region erupted into violent protests last week.

The protesters attacked two of Monusco’s bases in Goma and Butembo, where three UN peacekeepers were killed.
