Court found factory hand, 37 guilty, convicted and sentenced on three counts to a sum of 6,000

The court, presided over by, His Honour Simon Gaga said his explanation of the accused did not amount to a defence therefore entered a plea of guilty on count 2 and 3 for the accused.

Court found factory hand The Ashaiman circuit court has found a 37 year old factory hand guilty, convicted and sentenced on three counts of offence.

On count one, Daniel Newman was sentenced to 100 penalty units that is GHS 1,200.00 or in default serve 3 months in prison.

Count two, he was sentenced to 300 penalty units that is GHS 3,600.00 in default serve 6 months in prison and on count three, he was sentenced 500 penalty units amounting to GHS 6,000.00 or in default serve 12 months in prison.

All three charges are to run concurrently. Daniel Newman was charged on three counts of assault: contrary to section 84 of the criminal offences Act 1960 (Act 29), causing harm: contrary to section 69 of the criminal offences Act 1960(Act 29) and causing harm: contrary to section 69 of the criminal offences Act 1960(Act 29).

The accused,Daniel Newman pleaded guilty on count 1, but on count 2 and 3, he pleaded guilty with explanation. In his explanation, Daniel Newman said when he was running when Ibrahim followed and shouting, thief, thief attracting a group of people who also gave him a hot chase and caught him and started beating him.

In the course of beating him, he saw a knife on the floor which he took to scare them. But denied throwing the knife to cut the people.

Prosecution: Chief Inspector Samuel Aperweh presenting the Number 4807 D/PW/SGT Diana Oduro I/C case told the court that the complainants are Isabella Wilson, a 47 year old trader residing at New Quarters, Ashaiman, Ibrahim Summed, a 27 year old farmer residing at Zongo Laka, and Ernest Kofi Akornu, a 46 year old massage therapist residing at Zongo Laka.

Chief Inspector Samuel Aperweh told the court that the accused person, Daniel Newman age 37 years is a factory hand and reside at Zongo Laka in Ashaiman.

The accused person and first complainant Isabella Wilson have known themselves for some time now.

Chief Inspector Samuel Aperweh told the court that on 4/9/2023, at about 8:00pm, the accused person called her on phone and met her at Zongo Laka and in the course of their interaction, her response did not go down well with the accused person so the accused advanced and slapped her and she fell into a nearby gutter but the accused person began to run away.

He said the accused person was given a hot chase by Ibrahim Summed who was standing nearby and saw what happened. In the process, the accused person fell down and Ibrahim Summed attempted to get hold of him but the accused person who had a knife stabbed Ernest Kofi Akornu, an on- looker on his left leg.

The accused person was arrested with the help of other persons and brought to the police station. After investigations, he was charged with the offences and put before this honourable court.
