UN chief commends Kenyans for peaceful polls

Kenyans were praised by UN Secretary General António Guterres for keeping the calm throughout the elections.

In a statement, he applauded Kenyan authorities and the electoral commission for ensuring that people could freely exercise their right to vote.

He has asked voters and elected officials to maintain composure while they await the outcome.

More over 65% of the 22.1 million voters in the nation cast ballots on Tuesday.

The polling organization has not yet released the final turnout data, but preliminary estimates point to a decrease from the 2017 election, when 80% of the 19 million registered voters cast ballots.

The two front-runners for the presidency, seasoned politician Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto, are in a close battle, according to preliminary data.

99% of the results have so far been sent to the electoral body.

The final announcement cannot be made by the commission until the national tallying center has received and approved all physical forms used to tabulate the presidential results.

The results must be released by the commission within seven days.

Kenyans are currently anxiously awaiting the results of the presidential election.
