The new movie, titled 28 Years Later, will be written and directed by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland.

In the first Zombies movie starring Cillian Murphy from 2002, zombies took conquered the United Kingdom. There has already been one sequel to the movie, titled 28 Weeks Later, although neither Boyle nor Garland wrote or directed it.

Although the two worked as executive producers on the 2007 picture, this new movie is intended to be the first in a planned trilogy that will follow the 2002 original.

Murphy is also going back to the movie, although this time around he'll be an executive producer instead of the lead actor.

The post-apocalyptic theme of 28 Days Later greatly contributed to the early 2000s boom of the zombie horror subgenre. It made over £65 million worldwide, making it something of an unexpected success.

The movie went on to inspire the creation of further films, including Zombieland, World War Z, and The Walking Dead. In addition to advancing the zombie subgenre, it helped launch the careers of Boyle, who went on to direct 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire, and Murphy.

After winning an Emmy for her breakthrough performance in Killing Eve, Jodie Comer most recently acted in Ridley Scott's The Last Duel and Ryan Reynolds' Free Guy.

In addition, Aaron Taylor-Johnson has committed to the movie; there has been conjecture lately over his potential to succeed James Bond.

For the time being, Ralph Fiennes, the Oscar-nominated actor who is presently acting in Macbeth in Washington, DC, rounds off the casting announcements.
