Blinken arrives in Rwanda amid row over M23 rebels

In anticipation of discussions over Rwanda's suspected backing for M23 rebels fighting in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in Rwanda on a much-anticipated visit.

In addition, Mr. Blinken is anticipated to exert pressure on Kigali to free Paul Rusesabagina, who the US government claims are "wrongfully jailed in Rwanda" and is the subject of the Oscar-nominated movie Hotel Rwanda.

In what her supporters referred to as a sham trial, Rusesabagina was given a 25-year prison term for terrorism by a Rwandan court last year.

According to the US State Department, Mr. Blinken "will meet with Rwandan leaders and representatives of civil society on a range of crucial issues" in Kigali.

President Kagame responded on Twitter to the anticipated pressure from the US by writing: "No worries...there are some things that just don't work like that here!!"

Mr. Blinken traveled from Kinshasa, where officials asked the US to impose sanctions on Rwanda for "supporting the M23 rebels," who are currently in charge of a portion of the North Kivu province in eastern DR Congo. He then traveled to Kigali that evening.

Both Rwanda and the M23 rebels dispute claims that they fought alongside Rwandan forces. Rwanda has denied supporting the M23.
