The close-season is of no use, government must end it - Kokrobite Chief laments
Honourable Mavis Hawa Koomson ending the close season

The Divisional Chief of Kokrobite, Nii Ofei has called on the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo to put a stop to the closure of the sea since it doesn't help at all, saying fishes don't need spawning period to multiply.

Honourable Mavis Hawa Koomson, Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Minister, together with the Fisheries Commission, imposed a monthly ban on fishermen from going to sea, effective from Thursday, July 1 to July 30, 2021

The Minister on  August 1, finally ends the ban for fishermen to resume activities.

Speaking with the Media, Nii Ofei said the fertilisation of the fishes which leads to the birth of offspring takes place within July and August regardless of human activities therefore the intent of the government for closing the sea was needless.

He stressed that what distracts the fingerlings is the dumping of plastic waste in water bodies so government must pay attention to that and stop the sea closure.

The Divisional Chief of Kokrobite disclosed this to the media during the celebration of the Homowo festival over the weekend.

The chief finally pleaded with Government to create jobs for the Kokrobite Youth to reduce teenage pregnancy in the community.

Teenage Pregnancy is on the rise in the District as girls within 12 to 14 years have been victims due to lack of jobs in the Ngleshie Amanfro Botiano Municipality.
