The Divisional Police Commander of Winneba in Effutu Municipality of Central Region, Chief Superintendent Samuel Aseidu Okanta has emphasized that the celebration of Aboakyer festival this year will be suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Aboakyer festival is a bushbuck hunting festival celebrated by the people of Winneba in the Central Region of Ghana.

With the coronavirus pandemic still active and the various preventive measures still in force, the  Police Service in the Effuti Municipality says the environment is not conducive for the memorial.

Offenders have been warned that and anyone who bleaches the directive will face the rigour of the law.

According to the Superintendent, no letter of notification has been brought to the police for the celebration of the festival; an indication that this year's festivities will not happen.

The Chief Superintendent warmed organizing programs is prohibited by persons.

He, therefore, advised the youths to refrain from activities that would cause distraction of the peaceful environment adding that violators will be arrested by the police for others in danger.

Hunters go out into the bush unarmed and bring back a live antelope to the towns’ chief. The element of competition here is strong as teams compete to be the first to present their prize to the elders and be declared champion.

During the festival, ancestors are remembered as family disputes and other challenges are resolved.
