The Chairman of the Central Regional GPRTU has been arrested for embezzlement of over ¢400k

The head of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) branch in the Central Region has been charged by the union's National Executive Council with financial mismanagement and other actions that are detrimental to the organization's progress.

The chairman embezzled approximately ¢400,000 from the organization, according to an investigating committee set up to investigate his conduct.

At a press conference in Cape Coast, the GPRTU's National Chairman, Nana Nimako Ben Asiama, demanded that the Regional Chairman restore the money he embezzled or face legal action.

Three (3) regional officials of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, comprising the Regional Vice-Chairman and the 1st and 2nd Trustees, urged that the Regional Chairman's activities be probed in a petition filed regarding the alleged scandal.

According to them, the Chairman was unconcerned about the organization's constitution.

They charged him with circumventing the trustees and decided to exploit the union's finances for personal advantage.

Nana Nimako Ben Asiama, the GPRTU's National President, stated that prima facie proof of his financial misdeeds had been proved, resulting in his interdiction.

"We formed a committee to look into him." We gave him the chance to speak up. Based on what he said, we found him guilty. He is no longer the union's regional chairman," he stated.

The union claims that if the regional chairman does not repay the money, they would have no choice but to take him to court.

Ignatius Mensah, the GPRTU's Acting Central Regional Chairman, urged his members to be vigilant and report such incidents to the various Welfare Committees for redress.
