Scans seek to show how Egypt artists created mummy coffins

The scans are part of a study to find out how artists created the elaborate coffins for interring mummies. In a few weeks, the findings will be made accessible.

In order to learn more about how the complex coffins for mummies were made, two ancient Egyptian sarcophagi underwent CT scans at a hospital in Jerusalem.

The hospital and Israel Museum worked together to analyze the 2,500-year-old sarcophagi.

The layers of sycamore wood, plaster, and other materials that make up the caskets adorned with hieroglyphics could be examined by curators thanks to CT scans.

They said that the research exposed the skill of the prehistoric craftspeople.
