Rwanda holds population census

The once-every-ten-year survey of the population of Rwanda has begun and will last for the next two weeks.

A total of 20,000 officers are questioning people on a variety of topics, including how many people live in their houses, their education level, health insurance, their occupation, where they get their water and electricity, whether they use the internet, and whether they own a phone.

The country had 10.5 million people according to the most recent census, which was held in 2012.

Authorities have estimated that this census will cost over $28 million (£23 million), with preliminary findings due in December.

The first people to be counted were President Paul Kagame and his wife Jeannette.
