Nigerian senator due for sentencing over organ trafficking

Later on Friday, a senior Nigerian senator who was convicted in March of smuggling a man to Britain so they could remove one of his kidneys will be jailed at the Old Bailey court in London.

The victim, a 21-year-old street vendor from Lagos, was promised a better life in Britain and offered $8,000 (£6,340), but he didn't realize what was happening until he encountered medical professionals at the hospital.

The Ekweremadus are the first individuals to be found guilty of organ trafficking in Britain under the country's modern slavery legislation, along with a doctor who assisted them.

They might receive a life sentence as the harshest punishment.
