Kenya arrests fugitive wanted in US for drug trade

A suspect who had been charged alongside three others in a US court with being involved in a multinational narcotics and wildlife trafficking organization has been detained by Kenyan police.

Following a tip from the public, Kenyan police reported that detectives from its Serious Crimes Unit on Tuesday arrested Abdi Hussein Ahmed, alias Abu Khadi, in the central Meru county.

Mr. Ahmed was accused of conspiring to sell rhinoceros horns and elephant species valued at $7 million (£5.7 million) as well as a kilogram of cocaine in 2019 in a court in the Southern District of New York.

He was charged along with Mansur Mohamed Surur alias Mansour, Amara Cherif aka Bamba Issiaka, and Moazu Kromah aka Ayoub.

They allegedly planned to transport the horns and ivory out of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, and Mozambique.

The arrest follows a public appeal for information on Mr. Ahmed's whereabouts made on May 26 by the director general of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), George Kinoti, and the charge d'affaires for the US Embassy, Eric Kneedler.

Badru Abdul Aziz Saleh, Mr. Ahmed's alleged accomplice, was taken into custody one week following the plea.

The Directorate of Criminal Intelligence (DCI) stated that the arrest of Mr. Ahmed and Mr. Saleh "spoke to the long relationship that the directorate has had with the United States in combatting transnational organized crime in the world."
