Kenyan Sauti Sol has threatened to sue the presidential campaign.

Sauti Sol, a Kenyan music band, has vowed to sue Raila Odinga's presidential campaign for alleged copyright violation.

During the announcement of Martha Karua as the Azimio la Umoja Coalition's running mate, Mr Odinga's social media accounts are claimed to have used Sauti Sol's song Extravaganza as a soundtrack.

Sauti Sol issued a statement on Twitter condemning the exploitation of their music in ongoing political campaigns.

They stated that they are "not linked with or associated with the Azimio la Umoja campaign or any other political organization and/or party."

"The Azimio la Umoja campaign's flagrant disregard for our right to control the use of our copyright has saddened us."

Mr Odinga's ODM party, which is part of the Azimio alliance, expressed appreciation for Sauti Sol's music, saying that "playing their song...was a sign of affection for their effort."

However, some online users have slammed the band, claiming that Mr Odinga's coalition paid the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) about $4,800 in license fees to utilize copyrighted musical works in their campaign.

The MCSK is a government agency in charge of royalties payments to artists in the country.

Many artists, notably Sauti Sol, have criticized the copyright body for the compensation mechanism it employs.

Sauti Sol is a popular African male band who won the MTV Africa Music Awards in 2016.
