Nigerian authorities apprehend a suspected drug lord

Nigerian authorities said they captured a suspected drug trafficker onboard a plane at Lagos airport, describing him as a millionaire drug lord.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Government stated in a statement that investigations had identified Chief Afam Ukatu as a major importer of huge quantities of Tramadol, an opioid painkiller classified as illicit by the agency.

The arrest took place on April 13th, although it was just revealed on Monday.

Mr. Ukatu's whereabouts and response to the allegations are unknown.

The arrest came after months of surveillance and dodging arrest, according to the agency.

Mr. Ukatu is believed to operate pharmaceutical and plastic manufacturing businesses, which he "used as a front to smuggle illicit substances into Nigeria."

"This is on top of maintaining 103 bank accounts, the majority of which are used to launder money," according to the agency.
