Martin Kpebu says Lil Win could go to jail

According to private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, Lil Win might face jail time on allegations of negligent and inconsiderate driving.

Lil Win was arraigned on Monday, June 3, 2024, and was given bail in the amount of Ghc50,000, with two sureties.

Mr Kpebu commented on the matter in a radio interview with Accra-based Joy FM, saying that while fines are normal in such circumstances, jail is feasible, especially given the seriousness of the disaster and the death of the 3-year-old.

"Penalties can include incarceration, but fines are more common. However, in exceptionally egregious circumstances, imprisonment can ensue, with a maximum sentence of five years."

He underlined the need for harsher penalties to prevent reckless drivers in Ghana, where traffic accidents kill over 2000 people each year. He believes that a harsher penalty will send a clear message and increase road safety.

"We don't often charge them with manslaughter." He stated that the police typically charge them with careless or dangerous driving, among other things.

"Yes, throughout the last decade, more than 2000 people have died in traffic accidents. However, we do not see drivers being imprisoned for years.
