Kenya to import first GM maize batch amid hunger

Kenya is about to receive its first shipment of genetically modified (GM) maize as it struggles with the high cost of the staple food and a devastating drought that is putting millions of people in some areas of the country at risk of going hungry to the point of death.

Due to health concerns, Kenya's new government lifted a ban on genetically modified foods last month.

However, activist groups and some farmers opposed the move, raising concerns about the safety of GM crops.

But Kenyans live in a nation where they must compete with death, according to Trade Minister Moses Kuria, who dismissed criticism by asserting that there is "nothing wrong with adding GMO foods to the menu."

He says 10 million bags of genetically modified maize are approved for duty-free import over the next six months.
