GHANA CATHOLIC Bishops' Conference (GCBC) has called on the government to continue to institute security measures to stop the habit of Fulani herdsmen from visiting severe attacks to some residents living in Donkorkrom and its adjoining communities in the Eastern Region.

The Ghana Catholic Bishops expressed worry that they were unhappy about the reports of constant harassments and attacks being meted out to some residents in Donkokrom and sorrounding communities in the Afram Plains North District by Fulani herdsmen.
 
According to the men of God, these heartbreaking phenomenons which have created fear, panic, insecurity and tension in these communities in the region.

The Bishop of Donkokrom Catholic Diocese,Most Rev. John Alphonse Asiedu, made the forgoing statement when he was addressing hundreds of the participants at the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference held in Donkokrom.
The one-week intensive conference, which stated from Monday November 7, 2022 and would be ending on Friday November 12, 2022, brought together over 100 participants and about 20 Archbishops of the Ghana Catholic Church.

The conference was under the theme; "FOR A SYNODAL CHURCH: COMMUNION £ AND MISSION IN THE LIGHT OF THE NEW EVANGELIZATION IN GHANA."
In his welcome address, Most Rev. John Alphonse Asiedu outlined major challenges facing the people of Donkokrom and its sorrounding environs as poor road networks, including harassments and attacks being meted out to some residents by Fulani herdsmen and armed robbers.

According to man of God, although the national security agencies were on course of fighting against these human insecurity challenges facing the people in some parts of the region,he hopes that more need to be done to continue to clamp down on the armed robbery cases and Fulani herdsmen activities in order to bring peace and unity to these areas.
"I am thanking the Anti-Robbery Police Team of doing a great work by reducing armed robbery cases and Fulani herdsmen activities in our areas so they should not relay on their duties," he advised.

On the other developmental issues, Most Rev. John Alphonse Asiedu appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Eastern Regional Minister, Mr. Seth Acheampong to, immediately bring back satelite campus of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development to Donkorkrom, adding that the Donkokrom deserves location of the campus.
 
The man of God expressed dismay at the relocation of the Donkorkrom campus of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development to Bunso in the Akyem area.
 
Additionally, residents in Donkorkrom including the The Member of Parliament for Afram Plains North, Betty Krosby- Mensah also backed the call of the man God to bring back the campus of university to Donkorkrom and described the relocation as a discrimination against the people of Donkorkrom according to the 1992 constitution citing a possible involvement of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the deal.
 
‘’The action of the Minister of Education is an act of discrimination against us for which the constitution clearly frowns upon by article 17 (2) of the 1992 Constitution.
 
"We are tempted to state that the president of this country, His Excellency, Nana Addo Danquah AkufoAddo is involved in the relocation of the proposed Donkorkrom campus of the University to the president’s hometown in Akyem and thereby discriminating against us in favour of the people of his hometown’’ they  explained.
For his part, the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference, Most Rev. Philip Naameh, said the Plenary Assembly is an annual meeting of the Catholic Bishops to evaluate the activities of the Catholic Church in Ghana over the past years and to plan ahead of the future.

Archbishop of Tamale Catholic Church Dioceses noted that currently over 20 Catholic Bishops' in Ghana of which 2 are Cardinals.
 
The Eastern Regional Minister,Hon. Seth Acheampong therefore expressed excitement on the Bishops decision for choosing Donkokrom as the host Conference in the Eastern Region.
He commended the Catholic Relief Services to undertake development projects, including Education, Health, Peace and Social interventions to respond to the needs of humanity in the country.

The Donkokrom Atakora Chief, Nana Akuamoah Boateng Tano ll stated that the government can easily solve the lack of teachers and nurses personnel" within the Afram Plains Districts by way of converting some of the existing public schools to Trainee Colleges.

"If the government take this of my advice to initiate this measure it would ensure that the teachers and nurses who would be enrolled to that schools and after their graduations, they would be friendly with the environment thereby would start to work in the districts," the Chief suggested.
