4 persons were severely injured and 10 lost their lives when a mining pit collapsed on Wednesday 24th November at Wassa Esikuma in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region.

All the injured and deceased were illegal small scale miners in the region.

NADMO officials together with the police and other security agencies rescued the 4 injured on Thursday, November 25, 2021.

Western Regional NADMO director, Abdul Ganiwu narrates that all 14 were working in the galamsey pit when it caved in and got them trapped. 9 died instantly and 5 were taking to the Tarkwa Government Hospital. Another died the following morning bringing the number to 10. The injured are currently on admission at the Tarkwa Government Hospital.

Mr. Ganiwu said, “I am not surprised because the illegal mining is still ongoing. Government is still fighting it, but interested parties out there are also still working their way out into it. What I however believe is that communities should also help government in the fight against this menace. If not, the government will be fighting it alright, but they too will also find their way out”.
