Hotopo, a farming community in the Ahana West district of the Western Region has a population of over 2000.

The community depends on the 'Butler' river as the only source of drinking water in the area. They use the same water to do all their house chores.

However, the activities of galamsey in the area have polluted the Butler river which serves as the only source of water to the entire community, making it difficult for the people to access portable drinking water.

Speaking in an interview, some of the residents said they have to buy sachet water every day to drink and also used them for other house chores.

This according to them has made life becomes very much expensive in the area.

They have, therefore, called on the government to flash out the galamsey activities on the river to help save the situation.

The imminent threat of Ghana’s water resources running dry in a few years gets scarier by the day.

Water treatment plants are being shut down one after the other almost every time, due to pollution, largely by the activities of illegal gold miners.

In the Western Region, the main water bodies that have been polluted include the River Pra, Daboase, and River Ankobra.
