Egypt court upholds sacking of belly-dancing professor

The decision to remove a professor from a university over footage she posted online showing herself belly-dancing on her home's rooftop was upheld by an Egyptian court.

Mona Prince, an English literature professor, appealed a lower court ruling that upheld the state-run University of Suez's decision to sack her, but the Supreme Administrative Court dismissed her case.

It was decided that the films damaged her reputation as a university professor who was expected to uphold and advance moral principles.

Reuters reported that the court stated that she had strayed "beyond the scientific depiction of the academic curricula, and disseminating opinions that defy heavenly faith and public order."

After an investigation into the films she had put on her Facebook page, the university fired her in 2018.

Her employment in both private and public universities is prohibited by the court's final judgment.
