A researcher was imprisoned for a Facebook post

In a retrial, an Egyptian court sentenced a researcher to three years in prison for "publishing false news."

In a Facebook post on his aunt, researcher Ahmed Samir Santawy, 30, was accused of "posting false news from abroad" about the circumstances in the nation.

He was sentenced by a distinguished court in a decision that cannot be challenged.

Ahmed Ragheb, Mr. Santawy's attorney, informed the independent Mada Masr website that he would submit a request for his client's release to the freshly established presidential pardon committee.

In July of last year, the researcher was originally given a four-year prison term for identical offenses.

The verdict was overturned, though, after his attorneys submitted a grievance request.

Numerous national and international human rights organizations have demanded the release of Mr. Santawy.

On February 1, 2021, security personnel detained Mr. Santawy, an Austrian student, while he was on vacation at home.

One day before the beginning of a political discussion with members of the nation's opposition on Tuesday, he received a new sentence.

Before the discussion, dozens of political activists were released.
