1, 238 Burkinabes have been deported to Ghana, according to the Ghana Refugee Board.

The Ghana Refugee Board has acknowledged that it has received reports that 1,238 Burkinabe nationals have entered the Ghanaian border.

The movement is a result of the ongoing political unrest in Burkina Faso, where the military has overthrown President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré.

Tetteh Paddy, the Project Coordinator for the Ghana Refugee Board, told Evans Mensah on Newsnight on Monday, January 31, 2022, that the board has yet to determine whether these immigrants are genuine asylum seekers.

"We've received reports that about 1,238 people have crossed the border," says the statement. To assess these individuals, we plan to conduct an assessment exercise. Anyone who crosses the border is not automatically accepted as such. So we're going to call in the investigation agencies to make sure these people are genuine refugees," he explained.

"I can promise you that we are not taking the state's security for granted by just allowing asylum seekers or refugees in," he continued.

Meanwhile, Dominic Ntiwul, the Defense Minister, has guaranteed that security agencies are keeping a close check on the country's borders.

He stated that his region has deployed sufficient military and police forces to secure the country's borders in order to prevent any risk.

"...be confident that the situation is under control, and we are keeping a close eye on movements and activity across our borders." That is something I can assure the Ghanaian people. "What I can say is that we have enough protection in the operations area, notably soldiers and police," he said.

Given the number of assaults in neighboring countries, he claims that the government will perform a security review of all people entering the country through the borders to safeguard citizens' safety.
