The Member of Parliament (MP) for Anyaa Sowutuom Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Adomako Kissi has called for more public awareness education on the chronic of hepatitis B and its related diseases to reduce the chronic desease among the populace in the country.

According to him, the chronic Hepatitis B and hepatitis C  cause a heavy disease burden in Ghana and that the intensify public knowledge and awareness about the chronic of Hepatitis B and hepatitis C would be the best way to reduce the desease.

He maintained the lack of awareness about the prevalence of chronic viral hepatitis in the country and about the proper methods and target populations for screening and medical management of chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C probably contributes to continuing transmission; missing of opportunities for prevention, including vaccination; missing of opportunities for early diagnosis and medical care; and poor health outcomes in infected people.

He stated that high prevalence of chronic HCV infection is due in part to the lack of access to preventive measures, such as harm-reduction programmes, and lack of access to antiviral treatments in high-risk populations.

The MP who doubles as a trained medical Doctor made this foregoing statement when he organized Hepatitis B public awareness seminar for his constituents in this this year's commemoration of the World Hepatitis Day.
Today marks the World Hepatitis Day which is observed on July 28 every year to raise awareness about viral hepatitis and to influence real change.

However, to ensure that he cares for the quality health for his constituents, the MP single-handedly organized the effective seminar which sought to highlight the need to bring hepatitis care closer to constituents to ensure better access to medical treatment.
Dr Kissi explained that Hepatitis B is an inflammation of the liver, caused by a variety of infectious viruses leading to a range of health problems.
The medical expert added that hepatitis B leads  to chronic disease in many people most common cause of liver cancer.
He, however, explained that a lot of people are not aware of their hepatitis status, noting that the disease remained a ‘silent killer’, mostly undetected due to an absence of symptoms until treatment was late.

The member of Parliament Who doubles as the trained medical Doctor stressed that public awareness on hepatitis is crucial to encourage all adults to  screen for hepatitis B and children to get vaccinated against hepatitis B.
He stressed, knowing one’s status assists to identify those that are hepatitis B positive, so that it can be monitor and prompt treatment to ensure that complications don’t impact on many.
He appealed to the government to incorporate hepatitis screening and vaccination at the community level.
He advised the public against unsafe sexual behaviour, unscreened blood transfusion and harmful traditional practices to reduce their exposure to hepatitis infection.
He further expressed that effective coordination, awareness and improving vaccination would assist the country meet its commitment to eliminate viral hepatitis.
