The Ashanti Regional Health Directorate has undertaken the deworming of school children against schistosomiasis in some Districts in the Region.

Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, is a disease caused by parasitic worms. Symptoms that develop when contracted include fever, chills, cough, and muscle aches. Without treatment, schistosomiasis can persist for years.

According to Dr Michael Rockson Adjei, the Deputy Regional Health Director in charge of Public Health, the exercise will take place in 16 Districts in the region (Adansi Akrofrom, Ahafo Ano South East, Ahafo Ano North, Ahafo South West, Amansie Central, Amansie West, Amansie South, Atwima Mponua, Bosome Freho, Bosomtwe, Ejura Sekyeredumasi, Juaben, Sekyere Afram Plains, Sekyere Kumawu, Sekyere South and Sekyere East).

He told that the named districts are considered to be at high risk to schistosomiasis (Bilharzia) outbreaks because of the water bodies surrounding these areas.

“These districts are endemic for transmissions of schistosomiasis and it causes anaemia in children which affects their academics and their general growth.

"Apart from frequent urination of blood, there is a long term complication which affects the female genitals, bladder cancer and other chronic diseases “.

He also pleaded with the school children in the chosen districts to partake in the ongoing exercise.
